This has always been one of my favorite songs since I was a kid. I first heard this Boyz II Men song off the Boomerang sound track and fell in love with it and the rest of the CD. Babyface and L.A. Reid were the hotshot producers at the time, and they were cranking out hits left and right. Daryl Simmons was also one of their co-writers and they formed a super team of music production. Babyface (along with Jon B) always amazed me at how they could create music out of nothing. I, like many other people, just chalked it up to them being some of the few uniquely talented individuals in the world. I would only pretend that I was like them, making up album covers and track listings. It gave me a thrill to write my name as the writer and producer of a fictional song. Then one day, my parents bought me a keyboard, and that opened up a world of synthesizing and beat making music. Who knew I could write and produce songs too?
I always figured I’d end up covering this song at some point. Never thought it would be my first on youtube. It’s kind of cool how I accidently came across a simple overlaying of the videos and I thought to myself, “awesome accident!” There’s like a ghost of me. I ended up redoing the video and recording since there were so many mistakes, so what you see is what you get today. Ask me if you want to see the original and I’ll be glad to share it with you. In reality though, I think it’s a producer’s dream to have multiple selves. You know what you want, and it’s not always easy to convey it to others. If you could just have multiple ‘you’s’ it’d be so much easier. Well that’s why we have multi-track recording. But still, it’d be pretty awesome if you could do everything in real time.
Enjoy the cover.
